Zwarte Amerikanen mochten niet vechten, maar alleen onder steunend werk doen. Zo kregen zij de zware taak om in het Limburgse Margraten duizenden en duizenden gesneuvelde mannen te begraven.

Een van die grafdelvers was de Zwarte soldaat Jefferson Wiggins, 19 jaar oud.
Vijfenzestig jaar na de vreselijke maanden op de Amerikaanse begraafplaats was dr. Wiggins te gast in Margraten. Hij ontdekte dat men hier totaal geen weet had van de strikte rassensegregatie in het US Army van destijds.

Het is aan deze veteraan te danken dat inmiddels veel meer bekend is over de rol van Zwarte Amerikaanse troepen bij de bevrijding van Nederland. Hij vroeg oral historian Mieke Kirkels om hem te helpen bij het vastleggen van zijn herinneringen aan de traumatische tijd in Margraten.

Het boek Van Alabama naar Margraten – herinneringen van grafdelver Jefferson Wiggins verscheen in 2014, een jaar na zijn dood. Op basis van nieuwe en aanvullende feiten uit onderzoek door Sebastiaan Vonk (MA) en Mieke Kirkels is besloten tot het schrijven van deze uitgebreide, tweede editie.

Mieke Kirkels, Leiden (Nederweert, 1947), volgde een lerarenopleiding,studeerde Arbeidsmarktpolitiek & Personeelsbeleid,werkte als voorlichter, als Ombudsvrouw voor gelijke rechtenvan vrouwen op de arbeidsmarkt, als congresontwikkelaar HRMen als communicatieadviseur.In 2004 verhuisde ze vanuit Rotterdam naar Cadier en Keer.
